The Saratoga County History Roundtable is looking forward to an exciting 2022!
We are forming a closer relationship with the Saratoga County History Center at Brookside Museum to utilize the resources of both organizations to reach out to more people with more local history. Visit pages in this website to dig deeper into our activities – past and planned – including our “This Week” Saratoga History series, our planned “Hybrid” programs, our new Forgotten Crossroads video series, our Gristmill History Journal, our history tours and more.
Mission Statement:“The purpose of the Saratoga County History Roundtable is to deepen the understanding of local history through research and sharing of information among history buffs of all ages.”
The Saratoga County History Roundtable is a group of history buffs who have gathered together to share information on local history in an effort to gain a deeper understanding of the events of the past. It is our intention that by becoming more aware of people from our past, and how they lived their lives, that we may gain insight into how the past is truly prologue to the present and our future. The SCHR welcomes anyone in Saratoga County eager to share their knowledge of local history and learn from others.
The Roundtable was formed in April 2018 as the Ballston Area History Roundtable and became the SCHR in May 2019. We meet monthly to discuss topics of interest to the group. Presentations are mainly offered by members for members and guests. Occasionally other speakers are welcomed to share information on local history. All attendees are encouraged to identify their local history passions which can become discussion topics for the roundtable meetings. The Roundtable is undertaking several projects to encourage the dissemination of local history, including the revival of the Gristmill,a history journal published quarterly, an Oral History initiative involving local history organizations with oral narrative collections, and outreach through local school programs and historical tours throughout the county.
Beginning in March 2020 SCHR launched a new project, “This week in Saratoga County History” where authors share their knowledge of local history with articles that are distributed by e-mail and often appear in other newspapers and web sites. In October 2021, 58 of these articles were compiled into a book, “Saratoga County Stories” and a second volume is planned for the fall of 2022.
The group collaborates with the Saratoga County Historical Society and we consider Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa our home base, although we meet occasionally at other locations. Visit the other topics on this web site for more information on the Saratoga County History Center.
Becoming a member of the Roundtable is as simple as sending an e-mail to Jim Richmond, SCHR coordinator. Tell us your areas of interest and you will be placed on our contact list and receive all communication shared among the group.
